Hi everyone,
It’s been a while since I posted an actual journal entry (and Remus has been egging me on), so I thought I’d give it a shot. How’s everyone doing? I miss catching up with you all (notice I said you all not yall so I’m not a Southerner yet, not by a long shot). I’ve been home for a few days now after finishing my second year at Vanderbilt. I’ve got another semester of studies left for my undergraduate degree and then who knows what I’ll do? I’m currently signed up to try for the master’s program here, but I was thinking of studying abroad. Maybe England. I’ve always wanted to get out of this country and try something different… What do you all think?
I love math, I love computer science, but that isn’t all there is to life. That’s what you’d think if you looked at what I’d been doing for a while. To be honest, I’m not quite sure what I’m doing anymore. I’m working at NASA LARC over the summer doing some crazy research in my own apartment for the first time (well, with some roommates). It all sounds really awesome if you’re not me, but I still don’t know what I’m doing with myself. Everyone seems to assume I’ll get my PhD and then become some crazy scientist or something but I’m not sure if that’s what I want. There’s many exciting careers in and around computer science, but I feel like I’ve been neglecting the side of myself that I left back at Troy - the side that loves history, English, and philosophy. After reflecting on it, I still hate Spanish though :). I recently got through reading Dracula (I know, not exactly the high point of literature) and I was excited, more than I’d been in quite a while.
And I’d like to throw a shoutout to my lovely girlfriend who I’ll be seeing soon :). Heeeeey Clarissa! :). I don’t know what it is about the eyes of nostalgia, but the Troy days seem more care free and innocent than ever. Here, no one knows what they are doing or how their life will end up - but we’re forced to make those decisions. Will I be okay? No one can say. Only time will tell.
I apologize to those of you who used to know me as a decent writer - the intensive math and CS courses I’ve been taking have not leant themselves to my ability to express myself. Even now I can feel the limitations of expressions stopping me when once I knew a turn of phrase or colorful figure of speech to express exactly what I wanted to.
