Happy 2022 y’all. It’s the year with the most 2s in it of my lifetime and likely my son’s lifetime. In my book, 1s are for new beginnings but 2s are for seeing things through. So here’s hoping you see through everything important in your life.
I had a couple of weeks off of work to spend time with my son and rest/recuperate, so here’s the obligatory proud dad pics:
He’s using a walker and shuffling around, reaching for upper cabinets, and started using a spoon just today :). Couldn’t ask for a better kid.
RE: building software & getting paid for it
Well, first of all, I made some software that I’m not going to get paid for over here. That was fun. I thought I was going to get to spend some time building frontends in my current job but COVID turned that plan upside down and sideways, so this was the next best thing for now. Please excuse the code quality as a) I’m bad at JS and b) I was too lazy to write it well. Sometimes you just want the damn thing to mostly work.
As far as what’s next, here’s what keeps me giving my all and hopefully will make Reece proud:
- working with great people
- responsibility and influence on what gets built and the success of those who build it
- clear consequences for success / failure
Note there’s nothing in there about working on a sexy product. I’m a fan of the unsung products out there that quietly make sure our lives are the best they can be without requiring praise or publicity. Think ads, industrial processes, logistics, transportation, etc.
As far as sexy stuff and my grandpa attitude, I think crypto is scammer land (I have some purely for fun), electric cars are here to stay (although I have a PHEV), VR will be everywhere in 10 years, and biotech around diseases and aging is growing exponentially.
No matter what industry you’re in though, 90% of people with power, even if they are highly paid and educated, are doing silly things for silly reasons. The human race advances with the remaining 10%. Be part of the 10%.
