Wulingyuan Park and back to Zhangjiajie

Well, I did have to climb down those 3700 steps (and up some to get around the mountain… *sigh*). I did get to see duck, duck, chicken playing together, which was pretty cute. And then we had to walk next to a tram that only cost 40 RMB because we were confused about whether or not it led to a bus station. And then I stepped in a giant unmarked rain passageway and got my pants and shoes wet and dirty. But I guess it could be worse…we still missed out on the pics with the local girls, but Li reassures me that they’ll also be in Fenghuang (Phoenix). Hope he’s right. Breakfast and lunch were outdoors. Eventually we made our way back to the city, but our old hostel was already booked. Luckily Jia Ming’s friend has a membership card at the Home Inn, which is like a Day’s Inn but costs 220 RMB. Glad to be staying in a nice place not in the middle of nowhere again. After showering and repacking our stuff, we ended up going to a restaurant across the street from the one where we met Chairman Meow. It was decent, although the food was spicy and they didn’t have any real milk (only “milk drink”). Another visit to the ATM (500 RMB) and we went back to the supermarket. Their “milk” product also isn’t milk and wasn’t refrigerated. While we were there, we were plunged into darkness thanks to a power failure, in a store the size of a Walmart. Eventually the power came back on, but it was a good reminder that we are indeed in a third-world country. Sadly, we did not notice the “minority bar” area before going to sleep as the singing kept us up for quite a while. We figured out what electronics to buy in Hong Kong as well as the Wan Chai market to go to to recreate Deus Ex. We also reserved our hostel for Hong Kong at the Paris Guesthouse on Nathan Road.
